Rudolf Swoboda (1859, 1914) was an Austrian painter celebrated for his Orientalist works depicting the people and daily life of India, Egypt, and the Middle East. He was commissioned by Queen Victoria to travel to India in 1886 and paint portraits of Indian servants and attendants at the British court, resulting in a remarkable series of intimate studies. His meticulous technique and sympathetic portrayals of his subjects made him one of the most distinguished Orientalist painters of the Victorian era.
