Randolph Caldecott (1846, 1886) was a highly influential English illustrator and artist whose work fundamentally shaped the development of picture books and graphic storytelling. Born in Chester, England, he initially worked as a bank clerk before moving to London in 1872 to pursue a career in art. He quickly rose to prominence through his collaboration with engraver and printer Edmund Evans and publisher George Routledge, producing two illustrated picture books every Christmas season beginning in 1878. His distinctive style combined fluid, energetic line work with witty, humorous narrative sequences, demonstrating an extraordinary ability to convey movement, character, and storytelling through deceptively simple imagery.
