Allan Ramsay (1713, 1784) was a Scottish portrait painter who became one of the most distinguished portraitists of eighteenth-century Britain. He served as Principal Painter in Ordinary to King George III and was celebrated for his elegant, psychologically perceptive likenesses of aristocratic and intellectual sitters. His work reflects both the influence of his Continental training in Italy and France and a distinctly refined sensitivity that set him apart from his contemporaries, including Joshua Reynolds.
