Nathan Oliveira

Nathan Oliveira was a painter, printmaker, and sculptor associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement who taught at Stanford University for nearly four decades. His haunting, atmospheric works feature solitary figures emerging from gestural, painterly backgrounds, blending Abstract Expressionism with figurative representation. His work is held in major collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he represented the United States at the São Paulo Biennial.
