The Mumuye people of northeastern Nigeria are renowned for producing highly abstract figural sculptures used in healing rituals, divination, and as emblems of authority. These figures, known as iagalagana, are distinguished by their dramatically elongated necks, raised arms, and simplified geometric forms that have captivated Western collectors and influenced modern abstract art. Mumuye sculptures gained international recognition in the 1960s and 1970s when they were featured in major ethnographic and fine art exhibitions across Europe and North America.
