Moshe Elazar Castel (1909, 1991) was an Israeli painter born in Jerusalem to a Sephardic Jewish family with roots tracing back to the expulsion from Spain in 1492. He studied in Paris and became one of Israel's most celebrated modernist artists, renowned for his richly textured works incorporating ancient Hebrew scripts, basalt stone powder, and Kabbalistic symbolism. His paintings bridge Eastern and Western traditions, evoking the spiritual and historical heritage of the Jewish people through bold color and monumental form.
