Balka creates minimalist sculptures and installations that reference the body, memory, and the Holocaust using materials like steel, felt, soap, and ash. His monumental work How It Is (2009) for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall was a massive black steel container that viewers could enter. His work is widely collected and exhibited in major European institutions.
