Metahaven
Metahaven is a Dutch artist collective founded in 2007 by Iman Moradi and Behnam Behkam, known for their pioneering work at the intersection of visual art, design, and geopolitics. The duo emerged from the Dutch art and design scene with a distinctive approach that combines graphic design, video art, and conceptual practice to interrogate themes of power, identity, and digital culture. Their name itself—derived from the concept of a "meta-haven" or strategic positioning within information systems—reflects their interest in how visual culture shapes political and social narratives. Metahaven's key works and series include "Information Skies" (2010-2015), which explored data visualization and corporate power; "Guardians of the Deltas" (2015-2019), examining climate change and geopolitical vulnerability; and their ongoing "White Night" series that interrogates transparency and surveillance. Major projects include their work with WikiLeaks on visual communication strategies and their participation in documenta 13. The collective employs a multimedia approach spanning print, video, installation, and digital media, often creating immersive environments that challenge viewers to reconsider their relationship to information and power structures. Metahaven's lasting influence extends across contemporary art, activism, and design discourse. They have shaped a new generation of artists interested in the political dimensions of visual culture and information design, bridging the gap between artistic practice and critical geopolitics. Through their extensive writings, exhibitions at major institutions including MoMA and the Guggenheim, and collaborations with international organizations, Metahaven has established a model for engaged artistic practice that treats design and visual communication as essential tools for political and social critique in the digital age.
