Merce Cunningham

Merce Cunningham (1919, 2009) was a pioneering American choreographer and dancer widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern dance. He founded the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in 1953 and revolutionized the art form by separating dance from music and narrative, embracing chance procedures and collaboration with avant-garde artists such as John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg.
