Maria Martins (1894, 1973) was a pioneering Brazilian sculptor whose surrealist works gained international recognition through her close association with Marcel Duchamp and André Breton in New York during the 1940s. Known for her sensual, mythological bronze sculptures inspired by Amazonian folklore and indigenous Brazilian culture, she exhibited at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her bold, organic forms challenged conventional boundaries between eroticism, nature, and the unconscious mind.
