Lori Nix is an American photographer born in 1969 in Norton, Kansas, whose work is defined by an extraordinary process of constructing elaborate miniature dioramas that she then photographs to create large-scale, hyperrealistic images. Her meticulous tableaux, built by hand over months in her studio, often in collaboration with her partner Kathleen Gerber, depict scenes of post-apocalyptic decay, abandoned institutions, and nature reclaiming human civilization. Nix's work occupies a compelling space between photography and sculpture, blurring the boundaries between the real and the fabricated, and inviting viewers to question the veracity of the photographic image itself. Nix is perhaps best known for her ongoing series 'The City' (begun around 2005), in which she constructs and photographs abandoned urban interiors, libraries, subway stations, laundromats, and museums, overtaken by vegetation, water damage, and time. These images are characterized by their lush detail, uncanny stillness, and a melancholic beauty that speaks to themes of entropy, environmental vulnerability, and the fragility of human achievement. Earlier series, including 'Accidentally Kansas' and 'Amusement,' similarly drew on her Midwestern upbringing and explored disaster, spectacle, and the sublime through the controlled artifice of the model-making process. Her photographs are typically printed at large scale, amplifying the tension between the intimate craft of the miniature and the epic grandeur of the scenes depicted. Nix's work has been exhibited widely in galleries and institutions across the United States and internationally, and her photographs are held in numerous public and private collections. She has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Aperture, and various photography-focused anthologies. Her practice has earned her recognition as a significant voice in contemporary conceptual photography, particularly within conversations about constructed photography, post-photography, and ecological anxiety. Nix is based in New York City and has taught and lectured at various art institutions.
