Leonilson created intimate embroidered works, drawings, and installations addressing sexuality, vulnerability, and AIDS. His delicate fabric pieces with text and imagery became increasingly confessional as he confronted his HIV diagnosis. His work is held by Tate, MoMA, and Pinacoteca de São Paulo, and influenced a generation of Brazilian artists.
