John Riley (1646, 1691) was a prominent English portrait painter who became one of the leading portraitists of his era following the death of Peter Lely. He was appointed Principal Painter to King William III and Queen Mary II, producing distinguished likenesses of the English court and aristocracy. Riley was known for his restrained, dignified style and his ability to convey character with subtle psychological depth.
