John E. Ferneley (1782, 1860) was a celebrated British sporting artist renowned for his masterful depictions of horses, hunting scenes, and equestrian portraits. A pupil of Ben Marshall, he became one of the most sought-after painters of the English sporting tradition, attracting aristocratic and royal patrons throughout his career. He spent much of his working life in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, the heart of English fox-hunting country, which profoundly influenced his subject matter.
