Johann Georg von Dillis (1759, 1841) was a German landscape painter and art administrator who played a pivotal role in shaping the artistic and institutional life of Bavaria during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Gmain, near Waging am See in Bavaria, Dillis trained as a painter while also pursuing a clerical education, eventually abandoning the priesthood to devote himself fully to art. He became a central figure in Munich's cultural scene, serving as gallery inspector and later as director of the Bavarian royal art collections, where he was instrumental in the formation and organization of what would become the Alte Pinakothek. His administrative influence was matched by his considerable talent as a painter, particularly in the realm of landscape art rooted in direct observation of nature.
