Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant (1845, 1902) was a French Academic painter celebrated for his richly colored Orientalist scenes, portraits, and decorative murals. He studied under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Paul Laurens at the École des Beaux-Arts and gained fame after traveling to Morocco in 1871, which profoundly influenced his exotic, luminous compositions. He also became a distinguished portraitist of European and American high society and taught at the Académie Julian in Paris.
