Jean-Jacques Henner (1829, 1905) was a French Academic painter celebrated for his luminous, sfumato-style depictions of female nudes, biblical figures, and mythological subjects rendered in soft, glowing flesh tones against dark, atmospheric backgrounds. A winner of the Prix de Rome, he spent formative years in Italy absorbing the influence of Correggio and the Italian Renaissance, which profoundly shaped his distinctive chiaroscuro technique. His works were widely collected and regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon, earning him election to the Institut de France and enduring recognition as one of the most sensuous colorists of the 19th century.
