Janet Sobel (1894, 1968) was a Ukrainian-born American self-taught painter who became a pioneering figure in Abstract Expressionism, notably developing an all-over drip painting technique that predated and reportedly influenced Jackson Pollock. She began painting in her forties after her son, an artist, encouraged her, and her work was championed by Peggy Guggenheim and critic Clement Greenberg. Though largely overlooked for much of art history, Sobel has been increasingly recognized as a significant early innovator in the development of gestural abstraction.
