Hense, born Alex Brewer in 1975, is an Atlanta-based American street artist and painter widely recognized for his explosive use of color, fluid abstraction, and large-scale murals that transform architectural surfaces into immersive visual experiences. Working at the intersection of graffiti, abstract expressionism, and contemporary painting, Hense has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in bold chromatic layering, gestural mark-making, and dynamic compositional energy. His work defies the rigid letterforms of traditional graffiti, instead pushing toward pure abstraction while retaining the spontaneity and site-specific character of street art culture. Hense has completed monumental public works across the United States and internationally, with one of his most celebrated projects being the complete exterior transformation of a historic church building in Washington D.C. in 2013, which became a widely shared and critically praised fusion of sacred architecture and contemporary abstraction. He has also collaborated with major brands and institutions, and his studio paintings have been exhibited in galleries across North America, Europe, and Asia. His work bridges the gap between public art and fine art collecting, with canvases and works on paper that carry the same raw vitality found in his outdoor murals. As a significant figure in the post-graffiti and urban abstraction movements, Hense has helped define a generation of artists who emerged from street culture but pursued a rigorous, evolving studio practice. His influence extends to younger muralists and abstract painters who look to his career as a model for navigating both public art commissions and the gallery world. Based in Atlanta, he continues to produce ambitious large-scale projects while maintaining an active exhibition practice, cementing his reputation as one of the most visually powerful abstract artists working in public space today.
