Hendrick ter Brugghen was a pioneering Dutch Golden Age painter and one of the first Utrecht Caravaggisti, having studied in Italy and absorbed the dramatic chiaroscuro style of Caravaggio. Known for his intimate religious scenes, musical figures, and genre paintings, he brought a lyrical softness and distinctive palette to the Caravaggesque tradition upon returning to Utrecht around 1614. His work profoundly influenced fellow Utrecht painters and later impacted Rembrandt and Vermeer.
