George McNeil (1908, 1995) was an American abstract expressionist painter known for his energetic, gestural canvases that combined bold figuration with expressive abstraction. A student of Hans Hofmann, McNeil was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group in 1936 and later developed a distinctive style featuring wildly distorted figures rendered in vivid, clashing colors. His work bridges early American abstraction and the raw expressionism of the New York School, earning him recognition as an important but sometimes underappreciated figure in 20th-century American art.
