Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746, 1828) was a Spanish Romantic painter and printmaker widely regarded as the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Court painter to the Spanish Crown, he is celebrated for his candid royal portraits, the haunting 'Black Paintings,' and iconic works such as 'The Third of May 1808.' His unflinching depictions of war, madness, and human cruelty bridged the gap between the Old Masters and the modernist movements that followed.
