Hodgkins was a modernist painter who spent most of her career in Europe, working in watercolor and oil. Her work evolved from figurative to semi-abstract compositions combining still life and landscape elements, as seen in 'Wings Over Water'. She is considered one of New Zealand's most internationally successful artists and her work is held by Tate, Auckland Art Gallery, and Te Papa.
