Kitagawa Utamaro was a preeminent Japanese ukiyo-e printmaker and painter of the Edo period, celebrated for his masterful depictions of beautiful women (bijin-ga) and intimate close-up portraits known as ōkubi-e. He worked primarily in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and collaborated extensively with the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō, producing iconic series that captured the subtleties of female emotion and elegance. His innovative compositions and technical brilliance made him one of the most recognized Japanese artists in the Western world following his posthumous international discovery.
