Ewald Mataré (1887, 1965) was a German sculptor and graphic artist known for his stylized, rhythmically simplified depictions of animals, particularly cows, horses, and deer, rendered in wood, bronze, and stone. His work bridges Expressionism and a timeless, archaic sensibility, drawing on both folk art traditions and modernist abstraction. He is also significant as a teacher, having instructed Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and for his contributions to sacred art, including bronze doors for German cathedrals.
