Émile Signol was a distinguished French academic painter who studied under Antoine-Jean Gros and later under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, becoming one of the foremost practitioners of large-scale religious and historical painting in 19th-century France. He is best known for his monumental decorative commissions, including significant contributions to the painted interiors of the Church of Saint-Sulpice and the Chapel of the Virgin at Saint-Eustache in Paris. A regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and recipient of numerous state commissions, Signol exemplified the academic tradition's emphasis on technical precision, classical composition, and didactic religious narrative.
