Bartholomeus Breenbergh was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in Hoorn in 1598, celebrated for his luminous Italianate landscapes populated with classical ruins and biblical or mythological figures. He spent formative years in Rome, where he was deeply influenced by Paul Bril and the emerging genre of the painted Roman campagna, becoming a founding member of the Schildersbent. Returning to Amsterdam, he also achieved distinction as a printmaker and etcher, and his works continue to appear at major auction houses including Christie's, Sotheby's, and Bonhams.
