Clementine Hunter was a self-taught African American folk artist born on a Louisiana plantation, who began painting in her sixties and became one of the most celebrated outsider artists in American history. Her vivid, colorful works document the everyday life, labor, and spiritual traditions of Black plantation workers in the Cane River region of Louisiana. She produced thousands of paintings over her lifetime, gaining national recognition and becoming the first Black artist to have a solo exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
