Chila Kumari Singh Burman is a British-Indian multidisciplinary artist born in 1956 in Liverpool to Punjabi immigrant parents. Her practice spans printmaking, painting, video, installation, and neon-lit sculptural work, drawing on her dual cultural heritage to explore themes of identity, gender, feminism, postcolonialism, and the South Asian diaspora experience in Britain. Burman studied at Leeds Polytechnic and the Slade School of Fine Art, and has been a significant figure in British art since the 1980s, associated with the generation of Black British artists who challenged the mainstream art establishment and forged new visual languages rooted in lived experience and cultural hybridity.
