Carlos Schwabe
Swiss-French(1866)
Carlos Schwabe was a Swiss-born Symbolist painter and illustrator who became one of the most distinctive voices of the fin-de-siècle art movement in France. He is celebrated for his intensely spiritual and allegorical imagery, most notably his illustrations for Émile Zola's 'Le Rêve' (1892) and the iconic poster for the first Salon de la Rose+Croix (1892), which established his reputation as a master of mystical Symbolism. His work characteristically features ethereal female figures, angels, and otherworldly landscapes rendered with meticulous detail and a jewel-like palette, bridging the aesthetic concerns of Symbolism and Art Nouveau.
