Carel Fabritius was a brilliantly innovative Dutch Golden Age painter who studied under Rembrandt but developed a highly original style distinguished by light backgrounds, subtle tonal refinement, and remarkable spatial illusionism. His small surviving body of work — owing to his tragically early death in the 1654 Delft powder magazine explosion — includes 'The Goldfinch' (1654, Mauritshuis), a trompe-l'œil masterpiece of acute observation, and 'A View in Delft' (c.1652), which demonstrates his pioneering experiments with perspective and architectural space. Fabritius is considered a crucial bridge between Rembrandt and Vermeer, exerting profound influence on the Delft school of painting.
