The Baga and Nalu peoples of coastal Guinea produced some of the most visually striking ceremonial headdresses in West African art, most notably the D'mba (or Nimba) and Banda headdresses used in agricultural and initiation rituals. These sculptural works, carved by skilled male artisans within hereditary or guild traditions, served vital spiritual and communal functions tied to fertility, harvest, and the honoring of ancestral female archetypes. Colonial-era suppression of traditional practices in the mid-20th century severely disrupted production, making surviving examples rare and highly sought after by museums and collectors worldwide.
