Ericka Beckman

American(1951)

Ericka Beckman is an American avant-garde filmmaker and video artist born in Hempstead, New York, in 1951. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and later at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts), where she was part of a formative generation of artists that included Mike Kelley and Matt Mullican. Beckman emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a pioneering figure in experimental film, developing a distinctive visual language that draws on the aesthetics of games, childhood rituals, animation, and popular culture. Her work is characterized by its hypnotic rhythms, hand-drawn imagery, performative staging, and a surreal, often disorienting treatment of narrative structure that challenges conventional cinematic logic.
