Antonia Eiriz

Antonia Eiriz (1929, 1995) was a Cuban painter known for her expressionistic, raw, and often disturbing figurative works that explored themes of anguish, violence, and the human condition. Her style drew on influences from Francis Bacon and Goya, employing distorted, tormented figures rendered in dark, visceral tones. She was a significant figure in Cuban modernism and also became a celebrated teacher, profoundly influencing a generation of Cuban artists during her long period of withdrawal from painting.
