Alvin Baltrop
American(1948)
Alvin Baltrop was an African American photographer who documented the abandoned piers along Manhattan's West Side waterfront during the 1970s and 1980s, capturing the raw, clandestine gay subculture that thrived in these ruined spaces. His intimate black-and-white photographs, which remained largely unknown during his lifetime, have gained significant recognition posthumously through exhibitions at The Bronx Museum, MoMA PS1, and the 2016 Whitney Biennial. Baltrop's work provides crucial documentation of queer life in New York before the AIDS crisis while demonstrating exceptional formal skill in architectural and street photography.
