Alex Steinweiss

Alex Steinweiss (1917, 2011) was an American graphic designer and illustrator widely credited with inventing the modern album cover, having persuaded Columbia Records in 1939 to replace plain paper sleeves with illustrated artwork. His bold, colorful designs drew heavily from European modernism, incorporating elements of constructivism, art deco, and mid-century illustration to create visually dynamic compositions. His work fundamentally transformed the music industry and established graphic design as a vital commercial art form.
