Willie Bester

Willie Bester is a South African artist born in 1956 in Cape Town, widely recognized for his politically charged mixed-media assemblages and paintings that confront the injustices of apartheid and its lasting social consequences. He grew up under the apartheid regime in the Cape Flats, and his work draws directly from this experience, incorporating discarded materials, newspaper clippings, and found objects to create dense, layered commentaries on poverty, oppression, and human rights. Bester has exhibited internationally and is considered one of South Africa's most important contemporary artists, with his works held in major collections worldwide.
