John 'Crash' Matos (born 1961) is a pioneering New York City graffiti artist who began tagging the New York City subway system in the 1970s before transitioning his bold, graphic style onto canvas. He was among the first graffiti artists to exhibit in galleries, helping to legitimize street art as a fine art form during the 1980s downtown Manhattan art scene. His work is characterized by vivid colors, dynamic lettering, and expressive figurative imagery rooted in his Bronx upbringing.
