Cornelis van Poelenburgh

Cornelis van Poelenburgh was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in Utrecht around 1594, celebrated for his small-scale Italianate landscapes populated with mythological and biblical figures. He spent formative years in Rome studying the works of Adam Elsheimer and became a founding member of the Bentvueghels, a fraternity of Netherlandish artists in Italy. Returning to Utrecht, he achieved great renown and was patronized by King Charles I of England and other European nobility.
