Aloys Zötl (1803, 1887) was an Austrian autodidact artist and master dyer from Freistadt, Upper Austria, celebrated for his extraordinary watercolor depictions of exotic animals and fantastical natural scenes. Working largely in isolation, he produced a remarkable series of meticulously detailed illustrations of real and imaginary creatures, inspired by natural history books and his own vivid imagination. His work was rediscovered and championed in the 20th century by the Surrealists, particularly André Breton, who recognized in his images a visionary, dreamlike quality.
