Jess created intricate collages, paste-ups, and paintings combining found imagery from magazines, books, and ephemera into complex, dreamlike compositions. He was associated with the San Francisco Renaissance and was the life partner of poet Robert Duncan. His work is held by MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
