Emerson Woelffer (1914-2003) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter and sculptor known for his gestural compositions and active participation in the California art scene. He taught at several institutions including Black Mountain College, where he worked alongside influential artists like Josef Albers and Robert Motherwell, and later at Chouinard Art Institute and Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. His work bridged East Coast Abstract Expressionism with West Coast sensibilities, featuring bold calligraphic marks and dynamic spatial relationships, and is held in major collections including LACMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
