Carmen Lomas Garza

Carmen Lomas Garza is a renowned Chicana artist celebrated for her vibrant paintings, prints, and installations that depict the everyday life and cultural traditions of Mexican-American communities in South Texas. Born in Kingsville, Texas, she developed her distinctive visual language drawing from her own childhood memories and experiences growing up in a traditional Mexican-American household. Her work is characterized by a folk art-inspired aesthetic featuring bright colors, flattened perspectives, and meticulous attention to detail that celebrates the warmth, dignity, and richness of Chicano culture. Lomas Garza earned her B.S. from Texas A&I University in 1972 and her M.A. from San Francisco State University in 1981, later receiving her teaching credential from Juanita Brooks College.
