Carl Robert Holty (1900, 1973) was a German-born American abstract painter who was raised in Wisconsin, becoming the first major abstract painter to gain notoriety from the state. He was celebrated for his masterful use of color, shape, and form, earning recognition from critic Harold Rosenberg as 'a figure of our art history.' Holty made significant contributions to the development of abstract art in America throughout the mid-twentieth century.
