Jamel Shabazz is an American fashion, documentary, and street photographer who has spent decades documenting urban culture, particularly in New York City. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Shabazz developed his interest in photography during his teenage years and was significantly influenced by photographers like James Van Der Zee and Gordon Parks. He began seriously photographing in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, capturing the vibrant hip-hop culture, fashion, and everyday life of Black and Latino communities in New York City. His work is characterized by intimate, dignified portraits that celebrate the style, resilience, and humanity of his subjects. Shabazz's photography is perhaps best known for documenting the golden age of hip-hop culture and the distinctive street fashion of 1980s New York. His images capture young people in their element, on stoops, street corners, and subway platforms, dressed in the era's iconic styles including bomber jackets, gold chains, sneakers, and designer sportswear. His acclaimed photobook "Back in the Days" (2001) became a seminal publication, offering an insider's view of this transformative period in urban culture. His work has been exhibited at numerous institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem, and his photographs have become important historical documents of African American and hip-hop culture. Beyond documentation, Shabazz's work emphasizes themes of community, dignity, and social justice. His compassionate approach to photography reflects his belief in the power of images to humanize and elevate his subjects. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to photographing marginalized communities and using his platform to challenge stereotypes and highlight the beauty and complexity of urban life. His influence extends beyond the art world into fashion, music, and cultural studies, making him an essential figure in contemporary American photography.
