John Steuart Curry (1897, 1946) was an American Regionalist painter celebrated for his vivid depictions of rural Kansas life, dramatic landscapes, and the struggles of the American Midwest. He gained national recognition for monumental works such as 'Baptism in Kansas' and his controversial murals for the Kansas State Capitol. Curry was appointed Artist in Residence at the University of Wisconsin in 1936, a pioneering academic position that reflected his stature as one of the leading figures of American Regionalism alongside Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton.
