Henry Tonks (1862, 1937) was a British artist and influential art teacher who combined careers in surgery and fine art before dedicating himself fully to painting and draughtsmanship. He is best known for his satirical pastels, figure studies, and his pioneering work creating medical drawings of facial injuries for plastic surgeons during World War I. Tonks served as professor at the Slade School of Fine Art, where he profoundly shaped a generation of British artists including Augustus John and Stanley Spencer.
