Marcel Jean (1900, 1993) was a French Surrealist artist, filmmaker, and writer known for his innovative assemblages and objects, most notably the iconic 'Horoscope' (1937) and the haunting 'Specter of the Gardenia' (1936), a mannequin head wrapped in black velvet with zipper eyes. He was a close associate of André Breton and a central figure in the Surrealist movement, later authoring the seminal historical survey 'The History of Surrealist Painting' (1959).
