Rose II

2007

Rose II (2007) is one of Isa Genzken's most iconic large-scale sculptures, depicting an oversized single rose rendered in steel with a deep burgundy-red bloom and oxidized grey-green stem, leaves, and thorns. The work stands on a geometric steel base secured to the floor, and is photographed here from an elevated vantage point in an atrium setting with marble tile paving and an adjacent landscaped courtyard. Genzken's Rose sculptures operate as monumental, hyperrealistic symbols of beauty, fragility, and political gesture — the rose having been a recurring motif for the Berlin-based artist since 2007. As a major institutional-scale work, Rose II commands significant presence and commands attention as both a sculptural and conceptual statement.

Epoxy, steel, lacquer, and acrylic glass

Notes

Rose II is one of several versions of Genzken's rose sculptures. A notable example stands outside the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and another was exhibited at the New Museum, New York. The sculpture appears to be installed in a modern atrium space with marble flooring and a glass curtain wall. The base features a star/cross-pattern steel plate anchored to the floor with visible bolt hardware.
