Corridor Store Front (documenta Foundation)

1964

Between 1964 and 1967, Christo developed his Store Fronts , a series of full-scale architectural sculptures that resemble real buildings while deliberately denying functionality. These conceptual artworks combine interior and exterior space, using curtained windows and closed entrances to block visibility and create a paradox between architectural appearance and inaccessible space. Through the use of both old and new materials, the  Store Fronts explore the psychological and symbolic role of windows and façades, evoking a century of architectural styles while challenging conventional perception. Corridor Store Front (1967–1968) exemplifies this investigation by inviting viewers to physically enter a narrow passage, only to encounter a glass barrier that interrupts the spatial experience. The artwork emphasizes bodily movement and material presence, reinforcing Christo’s interest in interaction, obstruction, and withheld access. Issued as a signed limited edition artwork of 75, this two-part screenprint multiple stands alongside Christo’s preparatory drawings and signed prints as a key example of how his ephemeral projects endure through carefully realized editions.
